Welcome to your first day as a Junior Environmental Planner! 🤗

Environmental Planners are closely involved in the planning phases of large-scale infrastructure projects. Their job is to assess the impact of any development plans on the environment and biodiversity. This means conducting investigations and surveys, writing up reports, and having a solid understanding of the laws and regulations that govern environmental conservation during development.

It’s your job to make sure the project complies with these laws and that everything possible is being done to avoid, minimise and offset any impact on the environment during the entire project timeline – from construction to operation, and even beyond, if the asset is one day to be knocked down or cleared.

That’s a pretty important job, if you ask us! 😎 We're thrilled to help you explore this rewarding career path. Find out if it's right for you in this Discovery experience!

First, download your Memobook! 👋

Before we jump into it, make sure you download your virtual work experience Memobook.

‍Your Memobook will serve as a diary, brainstorm, and research document. You'll also need it for a number of activities throughout your work experience.

Let's go!

1. What is meant by the 'environment'?

We all have a general definition of what the word 'environment' refers to. But the more you think about it, the more you might begin to realise that what falls under this umbrella term can be extremely broad in scope and subject to debate. Is it water quality? Endangered plant and animal species? Air and light pollution? What about socio-economic considerations, or cultural heritage concerns?

An environmental planner, especially one in a project management role, really has to a jack-of-all-trades.

For your first task, we want you to go to page 2 of your Memobook. 🙌

Research and note 5 different different concerns or issues that might need to be considered by an Environmental Planner in the course of working on a large-scale infrastructure project. Write 3-5 sentences elaborating on each.

Now you know what Environmental Planning is all about, let's discover what a day-in-the-life of an Environmental Planner actually looks like...
