1. Geotechnical investigations

❌ close

In your project brief last week, as well as through your surveying information, you learned that the Toowoomba tunnel travels through some particularly rocky and treacherous terrain. This is where the geotechnical experts come in! The geotech role is crucial for determining:

  • how deep the tunnel will need to be
  • where it will go; and
  • how excavation will need to be conducted

‍

The geotech investigation phase needs to be done comprehensively, which can be extremely time consuming and expensive. It's going to be especially important for us, though, in establishing how the alignment fits into the challenging topography of the ranges.

‍

Step 1: Watching the Inland Rail video below will give you a broad understanding of how geotech investigations are conducted, and how they relate to surveying investigations and design processes.

Jot down a few dot points to refer to later!

‍

Step 2: What happens to samples after they're collected?

‍

Step 3: How is data reported and used?

‍

Okay, now you know a little bit about how geotech processes are conducted, let's move on!‍
