2. Connecting with people

Connecting with people or building strong rapport quickly is a skill that will serve you for life. Here Charlotte and Alisha give some tips on how to connect with strangers.

1. Check yourself

First impressions count, which is why the next topic is dedicated to your appearance.

2. Nail basic communication skills

  • Relax
  • Smile
  • Remember names
  • Keep your head up
  • Walk into a room with good posture
  • Listen attentively
  • Be culturally appropriate
  • Know when to leave

3. Ask open-ended questions

Finding common ground is one of the fastest ways to establish a connection with people. Use open-ended questions to find common interests and discover personal information. Maybe you grew up in the same town, share the same hobbies, or love watching videos of internet dogs with an unshakable passion.

People love talking about themselves, and if you are genuinely interested in the topic they are more likely to relax and share more.

4. Be genuine and empathetic

Listening intently will sharpen your emotional intelligence. When you know nothing about a subject of conversation, you have to really listen to craft smart responses and questions. The more people you meet with different backgrounds, interests and opinions, the greater your experience becomes.

5. Mirror the other person

Mirroring a person’s behaviour can create rapport. We will look deeper at mirroring soon.

6. Use laughter

What happens when we laugh? We relax. Humour is an amazing tool to build connection, but it has to be used well. Sarcasm can accidentally cause offense and comments can be taken the wrong way, so choose your words wisely.
