When it comes to task prioritisation, there are countless techniques to try.ย Here are some classics:

โ€

  1. MoSCoW analysis

This is a variation of the Must-Should-Could method.

Break down your workload under four separate headings: the Must Haves (vital things you can't do without), Should Haves (things that are important but not vital), Could Haves (the nice-to-have things)ย and Won't Haves (things that you can give up on).

  1. Priority matrix

โ€

The following matrix was developed by Stephen Covey. It's a useful visualisation tool for sorting out priority tasks. Once you've established a matrix, avoid the tasks that fall into the not urgent and not important quadrants.

If any of the above still seem overwhelming, just pick a single thing to focus on in a day that is the most important for you to get done.

But task prioritisation is just half the battle. Once you know what you need to focus on, how do you maintain that focus and stick to your schedule?

โ€

The Pomodoro technique is one of the simplest, but most effective techniques for time management.

It involves breaking your work up into intervals of 25 minutes and taking short breaks in between.

โ€

If youโ€™re working on a computer or laptop, consider downloading a desktop timer, or just use an app on your phone, to help you stick to the right intervals.

Alternatively, try time blocking - Elon Musk's time management tool of choice. Divide your day head of time into blocks dedicated to specific tasks, so you know you have that time set aside to focus on one thing.

Time Tracking is also a useful tool to help you understand where your time goes and where you can optimise. Use an app, or manually track your time with a stopwatch and a diary where you jot down how long you spent on a task, how many times you got distracted, etc.

And if any of the above strategies donโ€™t appeal, then the following video by productivity YouTuber Ali Abdaal provides a concise overview of 10 time management techniques proven to be effective:
